Have you ever wished your computer just understood what you were trying to do, instead of making you dig through menus and search results to get there.
Microsoft is working on exactly that.
In the latest Windows 11 preview, a new feature called Ask Copilot is being tested. It takes centre stage directly on your taskbar.
What is changing
Traditionally, searching from the Windows taskbar means using a basic search box that looks for files, apps, and settings.
With Ask Copilot, that same search box gets a significant upgrade.
Instead of just matching keywords, it uses AI to understand what you are trying to achieve and guides you straight to the right place, or helps you complete the task.
What it can do
You can type natural requests such as:
• open the invoice template I used last month
• connect to the projector
• how do I split this PDF
Rather than showing a list of results, Copilot can take action. It can open the file, change a setting, or generate a quick answer.
It is the same idea as the search you already use, just far more helpful.
Extra tools built in
Next to the Ask Copilot box, you will also see new shortcut icons.
These provide one click access to Copilot Vision, for understanding what is on your screen, and voice commands, so you can speak instead of typing.
What about privacy
If this sounds a bit too AI heavy, there is good news.
Ask Copilot is opt in.
You will only see it if you enable it in Settings, under Personalisation, then Taskbar, then Ask Copilot. If you do nothing, the normal Windows search stays exactly as it is.
Microsoft has also been clear that this does not give Copilot extra access to your data. It uses the same permissions as standard Windows Search and does not scan files or private content behind the scenes.
Why this matters for businesses
The real benefit is time and focus.
Instead of staff getting distracted hunting for documents, adjusting settings, or searching the web for simple answers, Copilot helps them get things done quickly.
It is another small step towards a smoother, more productive working day, where technology supports people rather than slowing them down.
When will it arrive
Ask Copilot is currently being tested in preview builds, but it looks likely to roll out more widely before long.
Would you switch it on when it arrives, or stick with classic search for now. For the moment at least, the choice is yours.
